The kantele is a traditional Finnish lap-harp with a 2000-year history rooted in the folklore of the "Kalevala," the national epic of Finland. It exists today as an authentic instrument played in Finland's schools, universities, and concert halls. Not only is it a beautiful sounding instrument, but the Finnish consider it one of the most important symbols of their culture.
Among Maine's significant ethnic populations are the Finns, most of whom arrived around the turn of the 20th Century. Like other cultures, the Finnish Americans have a strong desire to maintain and share important elements of their culture, such as their rich musical heritage.
Based in Maine, Kantele Laulu is a 501c3 non-profit organization. It is our mission to promote education in and awareness of the kantele and its significance in Finnish culture. Kantele Laulu sponsors a variety of activities and events in the Northeastern United States. It aims to ensure that Finnish Americans" musical heritage is preserved and maintained and that the kantele remains a vital part of that heritage.
